The murder of Nguyễn Thị Hoan

Nguyễn Thị Hoan was killed at her home in Me Village, Nghĩa Trung Commune, Bắc Giang Province, on August 15, 2003. Investigators soon focused on local resident Nguyễn Thanh Chấn.

Chấn was arrested in September 2003. On March 26, 2004, the Bắc Giang Province People's Court convicted him of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. He maintained that he was innocent, but the conviction was upheld on appeal.

A conviction that did not fit the evidence

Chấn and his family continued challenging the verdict. He alleged that investigators had forced him to confess. Later proceedings examining responsibility for the miscarriage of justice recorded that forensic officers had found bloody footprints that did not match Chấn and that case materials included statements in which he denied guilt and alleged coercion.

Those later findings matter because they show that the case was not simply changed by hindsight: authorities eventually examined specific investigative and prosecutorial failures that had helped sustain the wrongful conviction.

Lý Nguyễn Chung confesses

In October 2013, Lý Nguyễn Chung surrendered and confessed to killing Hoan during a robbery. The case against Chấn was reopened, and he was released after roughly ten years in prison.

The Supreme People's Court subsequently overturned the convictions against Chấn. By 2014 he had been formally cleared of the murder charge.

The actual murder prosecution

On July 23, 2015, the Bắc Giang Province People's Court convicted Lý Nguyễn Chung of murdering Hoan and robbing her. Chung received a total sentence of 12 years in prison, reflecting the sentencing limits applicable because he had been under 16 when the crime was committed.

The court also reaffirmed that Nguyễn Thanh Chấn was not involved in Hoan's murder.

Apology, compensation and accountability

On April 17, 2015, the Supreme People's Court issued a formal public apology to Chấn in Bắc Giang. He later received compensation for the years he had been wrongfully imprisoned.

In January 2017, the Bắc Giang Province People's Court convicted two legal officials of negligence connected to the wrongful case. Reporting on that trial described failures involving forensic evidence and omitted interrogation materials.

Status

This case is classified as Solved / Exoneration. Nguyễn Thanh Chấn's murder conviction was overturned and he was formally cleared; Lý Nguyễn Chung was later convicted of Nguyễn Thị Hoan's murder and robbery.
