The Murder of Natalia Melmann

Disappearance in Miramar

Natalia Melmann was 15 years old when she disappeared in the coastal city of Miramar on February 4, 2001. She had been out with friends and did not return home. Her disappearance prompted an intensive search.

Natalia's body was found on February 8 in the Vivero Dunícola Florentino Ameghino. The investigation developed evidence that she had been unlawfully detained and sexually assaulted before she was killed.

The first convictions

In September 2002, Buenos Aires provincial police officers Oscar Alberto Echenique, Ricardo Alfredo Suárez and Ricardo Anselmini were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes that included Natalia's abduction, aggravated sexual assault and murder. The trial findings established direct criminal responsibility for the three officers.

A civilian, Gustavo Fernández, also received a separate conviction connected to the abduction. His legal responsibility and sentence were different from the life-sentence murder convictions of the police officers, so Crime by Region does not collapse those outcomes into one label.

The long case against Ricardo Panadero

Former police sergeant Ricardo Panadero was another accused officer. He was acquitted in a 2018 trial after the court found the accusation had not been proven to the required standard. Prosecutors and Natalia's family appealed.

In November 2019, the Buenos Aires provincial Court of Cassation annulled that acquittal and ordered a new trial. On May 17, 2023, a new court convicted Panadero as a co-author of the unlawful detention, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated homicide and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

An additional participant remains unidentified

The convictions do not mean every participant has been identified. Later reporting on the forensic record described an additional genetic profile that has not yet been matched to a convicted offender. In 2026, investigators were still obtaining DNA samples from additional people in an effort to identify that person.

Because a material part of the group responsibility remains unresolved, this page is classified as Partial / Additional perpetrator unresolved rather than fully solved. The four life-sentence convictions are established outcomes; the identity and responsibility of the additional participant remain open.

Later sentence proceedings

Some of the convicted officers have sought conditional release or expanded temporary-release privileges after serving long periods in custody. Argentine courts have rejected several such requests, including renewed decisions in 2025 and 2026. Those sentence-administration proceedings do not undo the underlying convictions.

Current status

As of August 2026, four former police officers have been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in Natalia Melmann's murder case, but the investigation continues regarding an additional genetic profile. Crime by Region therefore preserves both parts of the record: substantial adjudicated responsibility and a remaining unresolved perpetrator question.
