The Murder of Michal Sela

Michal Sela

Michal Sela was a 32-year-old social worker who worked with at-risk youth in Jerusalem. She and Eliran Malul lived with their infant daughter in the Motza area outside Jerusalem. Contemporary reporting described serious tension in the relationship before Sela's death, including concerns Sela had shared with people close to her.

Sela was killed in the couple's home in early October 2019. Investigators concluded that Malul attacked her and stabbed her repeatedly. After the killing, Malul was himself injured and eventually went to neighbors with the couple's baby, prompting emergency intervention.

The criminal case

Malul was charged with murdering Sela under aggravating circumstances. During the proceedings he disputed the prosecution's account. The case therefore turned on the evidence presented in court rather than on an uncontested confession.

On October 6, 2021, the Jerusalem District Court convicted Malul of aggravated murder. Reporting on the judgment states that the court rejected his defense and found him criminally responsible for Sela's death.

Sentence

On December 26, 2021, the Jerusalem District Court imposed a life sentence. Malul was also ordered to pay NIS 258,000 in compensation connected to the harm caused to the couple's daughter. Contemporary court reporting described the life term as mandatory for the aggravated-murder conviction.
