Lindsay Hawker in Japan
Lindsay Ann Hawker was a 22-year-old British graduate working as an English-language teacher in Japan. In March 2007 she agreed to give Tatsuya Ichihashi a private English lesson after he repeatedly approached her and asked for instruction.
Japan Times reporting based on court records states that Hawker met Ichihashi for a lesson on March 25, 2007. She then went to his apartment in Ichikawa after he said he needed to retrieve money to pay her.
Discovery and escape
When Hawker failed to appear for work, friends and colleagues alerted authorities. On March 26, police went to Ichihashi's apartment. He fled while officers were attempting to question him about Hawker's disappearance.
Police found Hawker's body at the apartment. The discovery triggered a nationwide manhunt. This page does not reproduce graphic details of how her body had been concealed.
The manhunt
Ichihashi remained at large for roughly two years and seven months. Police circulated his image nationally and appealed for public help. During his time as a fugitive, he altered his appearance and lived under conditions intended to avoid detection.
In November 2009, information from the public and attention generated by updated photographs helped investigators locate him. He was arrested at a ferry terminal in Osaka on November 10, 2009.
Trial
At trial, Ichihashi admitted causing Hawker's death and admitted sexual assault, but disputed that he intended to kill her. The Chiba District Court rejected the claim that the death was accidental.
On July 21, 2011, the court convicted Ichihashi of rape and murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Prosecutors had sought life rather than the death penalty.
Appeal
Ichihashi appealed, again arguing that he had not intended to kill Hawker and asking for a fixed prison term instead of life imprisonment. On April 11, 2012, the Tokyo High Court rejected the appeal and upheld the life sentence, finding that the evidence supported intentional killing.
