Laura's move to Huelva
Laura Luelmo was a 26-year-old teacher from Zamora who had moved to the province of Huelva after taking a temporary teaching position. She was living in El Campillo when she disappeared in December 2018.
Her disappearance triggered a large search. Investigators ultimately focused on Bernardo Montoya, who lived nearby and had a prior murder conviction. The criminal case later established his responsibility through a jury verdict rather than relying on the shifting versions he gave during the investigation.
The crime and investigation
The jury found that on December 12, 2018, Montoya unlawfully detained Laura, sexually assaulted her and murdered her. Her body was later found outside the town. The trial was held behind closed doors in significant part to protect the victim's privacy and dignity.
Public reporting around the investigation sometimes emphasized statements made by Montoya at different stages. The final court record matters more: the jury unanimously found him guilty on the charged offenses, and the Provincial Court of Huelva sentenced him on that basis.
The 2021 trial
The jury trial was held in November 2021. Montoya was found guilty of murder with the aggravating circumstance of recidivism, as well as unlawful detention in conjunction with sexual assault, with a gender-based aggravating circumstance.
The sentence notified on December 10, 2021 imposed prisión permanente revisable for the murder. It also imposed an additional 17 years and six months for the unlawful detention and sexual assault offenses.
Why the sentence became final
Although the defense had indicated during the proceedings that it might appeal, no party filed an appeal within the legal deadline. On February 10, 2022, the Provincial Court confirmed that the judgment was final.
That procedural point is important. The case is not merely a first-instance conviction awaiting ordinary appellate review: the permanent-reviewable prison sentence became final because no appeal was lodged.
Later judicial references
In July 2024, Spain's General Council of the Judiciary discussed a separate prosecution involving a journalist who had published information from the confidential investigation. In doing so, the judiciary again summarized the underlying Laura Luelmo case and stated that the Huelva court had convicted Bernardo Montoya, after the jury's guilty verdict, of murder, sexual assault and unlawful detention.
That later official reference does not change Montoya's sentence; it provides an additional judicial source confirming the adjudicated status of the murder case.
