The crime and the decision to protect the survivor's identity
In September 2020, a woman traveling with her children was attacked after her vehicle stopped near the motorway outside Lahore. She was sexually assaulted and robbed. Pakistani news organizations generally protected her identity, and Crime by Region does the same.
The public significance of the case came not only from the crime itself but also from the scale of the investigation, the forensic evidence used to identify suspects and the intense scrutiny of how authorities responded to sexual violence. This file does not reproduce demeaning commentary or graphic details that circulated during the news cycle.
Investigation and evidence
Police eventually arrested Abid Ali Malhi and Shafqat Ali. The prosecution relied on a combination of evidence, including the survivor's identification, medical and forensic material, DNA evidence, recoveries and witness testimony. Contemporary reporting on the investigation stated that forensic profiles held by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency were used to help trace the suspects.
During trial, the defendants denied the prosecution case. That distinction matters: police or custodial statements are not treated here as substitutes for a conviction. The legal conclusion comes from the trial judgment and the later appellate review.
The 2021 trial
On March 20, 2021, an anti-terrorism court convicted both men. Reporting on the judgment states that each received a death sentence under the rape provision, life imprisonment under the kidnapping-for-ransom provision, a 14-year term for robbery and additional punishment on other counts, together with financial penalties and compensation orders.
The prosecution had presented dozens of witnesses, including the survivor. The defendants filed appeals within days, arguing that the evidence and procedure did not justify the convictions or sentences.
Lahore High Court appeal
The appeals remained pending for several years. On June 3, 2026, a two-judge Lahore High Court bench dismissed the appeals of Abid Ali Malhi and Shafqat Ali. The court also dealt with the mandatory confirmation reference required for the capital sentences.
On July 21, 2026, the High Court issued its detailed judgment. According to the published account of that ruling, the bench found that the prosecution had proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt through eyewitness, medical and forensic evidence. It confirmed the death sentences and rejected a Punjab government request to increase the life sentences imposed on the kidnapping count.
Why this file is marked partially adjudicated
The convictions are not speculative: both defendants were found guilty by the trial court, and the Lahore High Court rejected their appeals in 2026. However, a High Court judgment in a capital criminal case can still be subject to further Supreme Court proceedings. During this research run, no later reliable source was located establishing a final Supreme Court merits judgment after the July 2026 detailed ruling.
For that reason, the case is placed in the archive's Unsolved / Partial section for now under the narrower label Partially adjudicated. This does not mean the crime remains unidentified; it means the final appellate chain has not been documented to the standard required for this archive.
