What happened
On 4 December 2020, a 16-year-old boy was attacked in Helsinki's Koskela district by three acquaintances who were also 16. According to evidence later presented in court, the victim had been subjected to repeated bullying and assaults in the weeks before the fatal attack. His body was discovered three days later.
The investigation
Police recovered video material connected to the violence from the suspects' phones. Investigators also reconstructed earlier incidents involving assaults and robbery. The case drew national attention in Finland because of the ages of everyone involved and because the violence had developed over a period of time rather than arising from a single spontaneous confrontation.
What the court concluded
In September 2021, Helsinki District Court convicted all three defendants of murder committed as minors. They received prison terms of 10 years and 1 month, 9 years and 2 months, and 8 years and 2 months. The court concluded that the defendants must have understood that the victim was likely to die from the violence.
Final status
The deadline for appeals passed in October 2021 without any of the defendants filing an appeal, so the murder convictions and prison sentences remained in force. The case became part of a broader Finnish debate about youth violence, bullying, intervention and the responsibilities of institutions when serious warning signs are present.
