British tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were murdered on a beach on the Thai island of Koh Tao. The deaths drew international attention to the investigation and to safety in Thailand's tourist areas.

Investigation

Thai police arrested two migrant workers from Myanmar, Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo. Prosecutors relied heavily on DNA evidence and confessions that the defendants later said were coerced. Defense lawyers and rights groups challenged aspects of the forensic process.

Legal status and legacy

Thai courts convicted both men, and the convictions were upheld. Their death sentences were later commuted to life imprisonment. The case is classified as legally solved while acknowledging continuing controversy over the investigation.
