University student Jorge Matute Johns disappeared after attending a party at the La Cucaracha nightclub near Concepción. His case became one of Chile's best-known missing-person investigations. His remains were found in 2004 beside a road, years after the initial search.

Investigation

The inquiry examined witnesses from the nightclub, possible fights, and allegations of institutional failures. Later forensic reviews concluded that Matute had been exposed to pentobarbital, a sedative, but investigators could not establish with certainty who administered it or how he died.

Legal status and legacy

Despite repeated investigations and new forensic work, no one has been convicted. The circumstances of Matute's death and the identity of anyone responsible remain unresolved, so the case is classified as unsolved.
