The Murder of Jayde Panayiotou

Disappearance and discovery

Jayde Panayiotou was a 29-year-old schoolteacher living in the Port Elizabeth area, now officially known as Gqeberha. She disappeared on April 21, 2015, after leaving home for work. Her body was found the next day outside Uitenhage, now Kariega.

The investigation quickly developed into a murder-for-hire case. Police evidence and later court proceedings linked Jayde's husband, Christopher Panayiotou, to people involved in arranging and carrying out the killing.

The prosecution case

The Eastern Cape High Court heard evidence that Christopher Panayiotou had arranged for intermediaries and hired participants to have Jayde killed. The court ultimately convicted Panayiotou of murder. Sinethemba Nenembe was also convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, while Zolani Sibeko was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.

A fourth participant, Luthando Siyoni, was dealt with in separate proceedings. In November 2021, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in arranging the murder.

Sentences and appeals

On November 24, 2017, Christopher Panayiotou received life imprisonment for murder. Nenembe received life imprisonment for murder plus 15 years for robbery, and Sibeko received 15 years for conspiracy to commit murder.

The Eastern Cape High Court refused leave to appeal in May 2018. The Supreme Court of Appeal later dismissed Panayiotou's application for leave to appeal, finding no reasonable prospects of success. In August 2019, the Constitutional Court also dismissed his attempt to overturn the conviction.

Current status

This case is Solved / Adjudicated. Christopher Panayiotou was convicted of Jayde's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, and his later attempts to secure leave to appeal were unsuccessful. Other participants were convicted in the same or related proceedings.
