The Murder of Iwona Cygan

The last night

Iwona Cygan left her home in Szczucin on August 13, 1998. She was seventeen years old. The following day, a passerby found her body near the Vistula flood embankment in Łęka Szczucińska. Contemporary and later court reporting established that she had been killed; the homicide itself has never been in dispute.

The early investigation did not identify a perpetrator. Over time, the case became one of Poland's best-known unresolved killings, shaped not only by the search for the person or people responsible but also by questions about how the original investigation had been conducted.

A case that went cold

The inquiry was discontinued after investigators failed to identify an offender. Nearly two decades later, the case was revived by the Kraków branch of the National Prosecutor's Office working with officers from the Małopolskie police cold-case unit known as Archiwum X.

Investigators described a breakthrough in late 2016, followed by arrests and an extensive reconstruction of the old evidence. The revived investigation ultimately produced allegations not only against people accused in connection with the killing but also against former or retired police officers accused of misconduct related to the earlier investigation.

The prosecution

Paweł K. was accused of Iwona's murder, and his father, Józef K., was accused as a co-participant. A former friend of Iwona and fourteen former or retired police officers also faced allegations involving obstruction, false testimony or official misconduct. The defendants denied the charges.

Those allegations are historically important because they explain the scale of the trial, but they remained allegations unless and until proved. This page therefore does not repeat the prosecution's detailed reconstruction as established fact.

An eight-year trial

The Rzeszów court proceeding lasted about eight years. By March 2026, the evidentiary phase had closed and prosecutors sought a life sentence for Paweł K., twenty-five years for Józef K. and shorter prison terms for other defendants. Defense lawyers asked for acquittals.

The length of the proceeding reflected the age of the case, the number of defendants and the breadth of disputed evidence. In July, prosecutors sought additional forensic examination before judgment, while defense lawyers opposed reopening the evidentiary phase.

July 31, 2026: all defendants acquitted

On July 31, 2026, the District Court in Rzeszów acquitted all seventeen defendants. Reporting from the courtroom emphasized that the court did not consider the evidence sufficient to establish the defendants' guilt to the criminal standard.

The judgment was explicitly reported as not final. Iwona's family announced that it intended to appeal, and subsequent reporting stated that an appeal had been filed or was being pursued. No final appellate ruling reversing or affirming the acquittals was located for this dossier by September 3, 2026.

What the verdict means for the archive

The July 2026 judgment does not mean that Iwona's death is unexplained in the basic sense: she was a homicide victim. It means that the trial did not establish criminal responsibility against the people who were prosecuted. Because the acquittals were non-final and the responsibility for the murder remains unresolved, the case belongs under Unsolved / Partial.

That distinction protects both sides of the record. Iwona remains a real victim whose killing warrants documentation. At the same time, people acquitted at trial cannot be presented as convicted offenders merely because prosecutors once accused them.

The 2026 trial produced acquittals rather than a conviction, and those acquittals had not become the final appellate endpoint in the reviewed reporting by September 3, 2026. No person is identified here as Iwona Cygan's murderer without a valid evidentiary basis.
