Ilse Uyttersprot
Ilse Uyttersprot was a long-serving local politician in Aalst. She had been a city councillor, a member of the federal parliament and mayor of Aalst from 2007 to 2012. At the time of her death she remained active in local politics.
Her death in 2020 quickly became a major Belgian case, both because of her public role and because it brought renewed attention to intimate-partner violence.
The killing and immediate surrender
On the morning of August 4, 2020, Jurgen Demesmaeker went to police and admitted that he had killed Uyttersprot at his home in Aalst. Officers then found her body at the property.
Demesmaeker never denied causing her death, but he disputed a crucial legal element: whether the killing had been planned in advance. That distinction determined whether the facts amounted to murder with premeditation rather than a lesser form of homicide.
Evidence heard at the assize trial
