The attack at the outpost
On the evening of June 21, 2014, the defendant, a sergeant serving in the Republic of Korea Army's 22nd Infantry Division, attacked fellow soldiers at a general outpost in Goseong County near the eastern section of the inter-Korean border. Court and press accounts describe him throwing a grenade and firing a K-2 rifle at soldiers at and around the barracks.
Five soldiers were killed and seven were wounded. The defendant then left the unit while armed, prompting an intensive military search in the border region.
The manhunt and arrest
The search continued into the following days. Military personnel surrounded the fugitive after locating him in the Goseong area. He was ultimately taken into custody after a prolonged standoff and a failed attempt to take his own life.
The fact that the defendant was captured alive allowed the killings to be tested through a full criminal process rather than being classified merely by police attribution. That distinction is important for the site's solved/adjudicated classification.
Claims about bullying and motive
During the proceedings, the defense argued that the sergeant had experienced ostracism and humiliation. Those claims became a major public discussion because of wider concerns about abuse and adjustment problems inside South Korea's conscript military.
The Supreme Court acknowledged evidence that the defendant had experienced bullying earlier in life and had personality-related difficulties, but it did not accept that conditions in the unit reached a level that legally justified reducing the sentence imposed by the military courts. This dossier therefore reports the bullying argument as a defense and sentencing issue, not as an excuse for the killings or as a finding that the victims were responsible for what happened.
The court-martial
On February 3, 2015, the general military court of the First Army Command convicted the sergeant and sentenced him to death. Reporting from the courtroom stated that the court regarded the attack as deliberate and emphasized that unarmed fellow soldiers had been targeted.
The High Military Court later rejected his appeal. The case then reached South Korea's Supreme Court, giving the final judicial review particular significance.
The Supreme Court's final ruling
On February 19, 2016, the Supreme Court sitting en banc rejected the defendant's final appeal and upheld the death sentence. Yonhap and MBC both reported that the Court left intact the military-court findings that he had killed five colleagues and wounded seven.
South Korea had not carried out an execution since 1997 at the time of the ruling. The judicial status of this case, however, is clear regardless of the country's execution policy: the conviction and sentence became final through the Supreme Court.
Why this is one case file
The five deaths and seven injuries arose from the same attack and the same criminal prosecution. They are therefore documented here as a single event rather than split into separate pages for each casualty. That preserves the investigative and judicial context and avoids artificially inflating the archive.

Current status
The 2014 Goseong military base shooting is solved and adjudicated. A defendant was convicted for the five killings and seven woundings, and South Korea's Supreme Court finalized the judgment in 2016. The page does not turn contested accounts of workplace treatment into established motive beyond what the courts addressed.
