Giulia Cecchettin
Giulia Cecchettin was a 22-year-old university student from Vigonovo in the Veneto region. She was close to completing her degree when she disappeared after spending part of the evening of November 11, 2023, with her former boyfriend, Filippo Turetta.
Disappearance and search
When Giulia did not return, authorities opened a search that quickly expanded beyond the local area. Investigators reconstructed the movements of the pair using surveillance footage, vehicle records and other evidence. Turetta left Italy and was arrested in Germany several days later before being extradited to Italy.
Giulia's body was found on November 18, 2023, near Lake Barcis in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. This archive does not reproduce the graphic details of her injuries; the criminal case established that she had been deliberately killed by Turetta.
Investigation and admission
Turetta admitted responsibility for the killing. The prosecution alleged that the crime had been planned in advance, relying on the sequence of events before and after Giulia's disappearance and evidence concerning preparations and the attempt to flee.
Because Turetta admitted the central act, the trial focused less on identity than on the legal characterization of the murder, aggravating circumstances and sentence. The court recognized premeditation, while it did not accept every aggravating circumstance requested by prosecutors.
The 2024 trial
On December 3, 2024, the Court of Assizes in Venice convicted Filippo Turetta and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The judgment recognized premeditation. The court did not recognize the separate aggravating circumstances of cruelty and stalking that prosecutors had also argued for.
The sentence included civil compensation orders for members of Giulia's family and permanent disqualification from public office. Those financial and ancillary orders are separate from the core criminal finding that Turetta was guilty of Giulia's murder.
Appeals and finality
In May 2025, both prosecution and defense filed appeals on different issues. Prosecutors sought recognition of additional aggravating circumstances, while the defense challenged premeditation and sought mitigating factors.
The procedural picture changed later that year. Turetta withdrew his appeal in October 2025, and the prosecution general subsequently withdrew its appeal. On November 14, 2025, the Venice Court of Assizes of Appeal declared the appeals inadmissible because they had been withdrawn and left the life sentence, including the finding of premeditation, in place.
Public impact
Giulia's murder became a major public reference point in Italy's discussion of violence against women and intimate-partner abuse. Her family, including her father Gino Cecchettin, emphasized prevention and education rather than treating punishment alone as the answer. This broader social impact is part of the case's history, but it is distinct from the facts the criminal court was asked to decide.
