What happened
On August 18, 2019, Emine Bulut met her former husband, Fedai Varan, in Kırıkkale. Their ten-year-old daughter was present. During the encounter, Varan attacked Bulut with a knife and fled. Emergency teams took Bulut to hospital, where she died from her injuries.
The killing drew nationwide attention in Turkey after footage recorded immediately after the attack circulated online. Crime by Region does not reproduce that material. The evidentiary and legal record is sufficient without repeating the victim's final moments for shock value.
Arrest and prosecution
Varan was taken into custody shortly after the attack and was later jailed pending trial. Prosecutors sought an aggravated life sentence on the theory that the killing had been planned and carried out with particular cruelty.
The Kırıkkale 1st Heavy Penal Court heard the case in 2019. Varan admitted the killing but disputed the prosecution's characterization of premeditation and sought sentence reductions. The court did not accept a reduction based on good conduct or unjust provocation.
Trial and sentence
On October 21, 2019, the trial court convicted Fedai Varan of intentional killing and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The prosecution appealed, arguing that the conduct should have resulted in aggravated life imprisonment.
The Ankara Regional Court of Justice upheld the life sentence. The case then reached Turkey's Court of Cassation. In 2022, the 1st Penal Chamber rejected the appeals and left the life sentence in place.
Why the legal distinction matters
Contemporary reporting sometimes described the indictment's aggravated-life request and the final sentence in the same narrative. They are not the same thing. The prosecution sought aggravated life imprisonment, while the final adjudicated punishment was life imprisonment. This page records the sentence that survived appellate review.
