A series that did not initially look like one series
The killings attributed to Donato Bilancia occurred over a short period across northern Italy. The victims and settings varied, and the apparent motives were not identical from case to case. Some crimes involved robbery or people connected to gambling and money; other victims had no known personal connection to Bilancia.

The investigation narrows
Investigators eventually focused on Bilancia through evidence connecting him to the movements surrounding several crimes. Contemporary Italian reporting later recalled that investigators examined the vehicle he used and other forensic and circumstantial evidence while narrowing the suspect pool.
Bilancia was arrested in Genoa on May 6, 1998. He subsequently confessed to the series. The confession was not the only basis of the prosecution: the trial record also examined corroborating evidence and testimony connected to the individual crimes.
Seventeen murder convictions
On April 12, 2000, the Genoa Court of Assizes convicted Bilancia in the prosecution covering seventeen murders. The court imposed thirteen life sentences, along with additional punishment for an attempted murder and other offences.
The University of Florence's legal research archive describes a lengthy trial record involving numerous hearings, witnesses and experts. The court considered both Bilancia's admissions and evidence developed for each killing, rather than treating the series as one undifferentiated event.
Appeals and final status
Later Italian sources consistently describe the thirteen life sentences as the final punishment for the seventeen murders. Bilancia remained imprisoned for the rest of his life. Attempts to obtain procedural benefits did not overturn the murder convictions.
ANSA reported that Bilancia died on December 17, 2020 while incarcerated at Padua's Due Palazzi prison. His death ended sentence execution but did not alter the convictions.
