Dafna Meir
Dafna Meir was a nurse and the mother of six children, including two foster children. Contemporary reporting and later memorial coverage describe a woman whose professional life centered on health care and whose family life included both biological and foster parenting. Her death became widely known in Israel, but the core of this case is a homicide investigation and a documented court outcome rather than the political rhetoric that followed it.
Crime by Region follows the existing Israel archive convention for cases occurring in Otniel and other locations in the West Bank. The geographic description here therefore states the physical location directly: Otniel is an Israeli settlement in the southern West Bank.
The attack at the family home
On January 17, 2016, Meir was attacked at the entrance to her home. She was 38. Multiple established reports state that several of her children were inside the house at the time. The attacker fled the area after the killing.
The public record contains highly graphic descriptions of the attack. They are not necessary to understand either the crime or the prosecution and are omitted here. What matters for the legal chronology is that Meir was killed at her home, investigators began an immediate search, and a suspect was taken into custody two days later.
Arrest and identification of the suspect
Israeli security forces arrested Morad Bader Abdullah Adais in the nearby village of Beit Amra on January 19, 2016. He was 16 at the time. Reporting on the arrest said that he admitted responsibility during questioning. An indictment followed in February.
Investigators and the prosecution also advanced a political or nationalist explanation for the attack, based in part on statements they attributed to the teenager during interrogation and on media he was said to have watched beforehand. Those claims are presented here as the authorities' account of motive. They are not necessary to establish the central adjudicated fact: Adais was later convicted of Meir's murder.
Indictment and conviction
The case was heard in a military court in the West Bank. On May 3, 2016, the court convicted Adais of murder and illegal possession of a knife. The conviction therefore provides a firmer basis for classification than the earlier arrest or confession reports alone.
Because the defendant was a minor, some early reports avoided publishing his identity. Later established reporting named him in connection with the conviction. This file does not add personal details about the juvenile defendant beyond those necessary to identify the adjudicated case.
Life sentence
On November 2, 2016, the court sentenced Adais to life imprisonment. The court also imposed substantial financial compensation for Meir's family and recommended against an early release. Different reports rendered the compensation amount in different currencies; rather than convert or inflate those figures, this page records the undisputed sentencing result: a life term plus a compensation order.
The available sources used for this file establish the conviction and sentence. They do not provide a later appellate judgment overturning those findings, and this page does not invent one.

What the court record establishes
The strongest factual line in this case is straightforward: Meir was killed in January 2016, Adais was arrested shortly afterward, and the court convicted him of murder. This file does not convert every claim made during interrogation or every political characterization in contemporary coverage into a separate established fact.
That distinction is especially important in cases arising from politically charged violence. The homicide and adjudication can be documented precisely while motive, ideology and broader conflict narratives are attributed to the sources that make those claims.
Aftermath
Meir's death was commemorated in public life. Later in 2016, Israel's first comprehensive foster-care law was dedicated to her memory, reflecting her family's connection to foster care. That legislative memorial is not evidence about the crime itself, but it helps explain why her name remained prominent beyond the criminal proceeding.
Current classification
The Murder of Dafna Meir is classified Solved / Adjudicated. Morad Bader Abdullah Adais was convicted of murder and illegal knife possession and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2016. Claims about the ideological motivation for the attack are identified as claims attributed to investigators and contemporary authorities rather than treated as independent proof.
