What happened
Ceren Özdemir was a third-year student in Ordu University's Faculty of Music and Performing Arts. On December 3, 2019, she was attacked as she entered the building where she lived in Altınordu. She was taken to hospital but died from her injuries.
Police identified Özgür Arduç as the suspect and arrested him the following day. During the arrest, separate violence against police officers led to another criminal proceeding, but that prosecution is distinct from the murder judgment addressed here.
Investigation and criminal responsibility
Prosecutors charged Arduç with a qualified form of intentional murder. He raised questions about his mental condition during the proceedings, but a medical board unanimously found that he had full criminal responsibility for the offense.
The murder trial focused on whether the evidence supported the aggravated form of intentional killing alleged by prosecutors. The court accepted that characterization.
Trial and sentence
On January 20, 2020, Ordu 1st High Criminal Court convicted Arduç and imposed aggravated life imprisonment. The court declined to apply a discretionary sentence reduction.
In July 2020, the Samsun Regional Court of Justice rejected the appeal and found the first-instance judgment lawful. The case then proceeded to Turkey's Court of Cassation.
Final appeal
On October 5, 2021, the 1st Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation upheld the aggravated-life sentence. Anadolu Agency reported the final appellate decision publicly in November 2021. The ruling provided that the sentence would be served under the strict-security regime applicable to the conviction.
The final result is therefore not merely an arrest or first-instance judgment: the conviction survived both regional appellate review and the Court of Cassation.
