The attacks
On March 12, 1993, a series of coordinated explosions struck locations across Bombay, now Mumbai. The Supreme Court record describes 257 deaths, 713 injuries and extensive property damage. The attacks followed a period of severe communal violence in the city, but this page does not attribute criminal responsibility to any community.
The prosecution
The investigation produced a very large TADA prosecution involving people accused of conspiracy, facilitation, transport, weapons offences and direct participation. Their legal responsibility was not identical. Some defendants were convicted of conspiracy and terrorism offences, others received lesser convictions, and some were acquitted.
Actor Sanjay Dutt, for example, was convicted under the Arms Act but was acquitted of the more serious terrorism conspiracy charge. He is therefore not described here as a participant in the bombing conspiracy.
Supreme Court review
On March 21, 2013, the Supreme Court upheld Yakub Abdul Razak Memon's conviction and death sentence, while commuting the death sentences of ten other defendants to imprisonment for life and deciding many other appeals individually. The Court also upheld or modified numerous life and fixed-term sentences.
The Supreme Court judgment treated Yakub Memon as a central participant in the conspiracy. He was later executed on July 30, 2015 after further legal challenges failed.
What remains unresolved
The criminal case produced substantial adjudication, but it did not place every alleged principal conspirator before the court. Figures including Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon were alleged by investigators and described in the litigation as central conspirators, but they were not convicted in this proceeding because they were not tried. This distinction is why the page is classified as Partially Adjudicated rather than implying complete accountability for the full alleged conspiracy.
