The Bình Dương Concrete-Body Murders

The victims and the discovery

Trần Đức Linh and Trần Trí Thành were members of the same small spiritual-practice group as the four women later prosecuted in the case. Vietnamese court reporting placed the events across Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu and Bình Dương in early 2019.

In May 2019, a new owner of a rented house in Hưng Hòa Commune, Bàu Bàng District, discovered human remains concealed inside large containers at the property and notified police. Investigators identified the victims as Linh and Thành and arrested four women connected to the group shortly afterward.

What the courts found

According to the first-instance judgment summarized by Vietnamese news organizations, Linh attempted to leave the group during a period of strict fasting and was assaulted after being stopped. The court treated the defendants' conduct surrounding his death as criminally responsible conduct, while also distinguishing the specific acts attributed to each participant.

The later killing of Thành was treated as a deliberate homicide. Prosecutors and the court said Phạm Thị Thiên Hà directed the group and played the central role in the killings. Crime by Region does not reproduce sensational or graphic details from the evidence because they are not necessary to understand the legal findings.

First-instance verdict

On July 3, 2020, the Bình Dương Province People's Court sentenced Phạm Thị Thiên Hà to death for murder. Lê Ngọc Phương Thảo received a total sentence of 22 years, Nguyễn Ngọc Tâm Huyên received 19 years, and Trịnh Thị Hồng Hoa received 13 years. The charges and sentence components were not identical for every defendant, and the archive preserves those distinctions.

Contemporary reporting also recorded compensation orders for the victims' families.

Appeal

Three defendants — Hà, Huyên and Hoa — challenged the first-instance judgment. The appellate hearing was postponed more than once, including for health reasons, before the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City heard the case on December 31, 2021.

The appellate panel rejected the challenges and upheld the first-instance judgment. Hà's death sentence remained in place; Huyên's 19-year sentence and Hoa's 13-year sentence were also upheld. Thảo had not pursued the same appeal.

Status

The case is classified as Solved / Adjudicated because the defendants were convicted and the principal appellate challenges were resolved by a higher court.

The classification does not imply that every defendant had the same factual role or legal exposure. The court record and reporting separated leadership, participation and additional offenses.
