The family at Bản Phồng
The victims belonged to one household in Bản Phồng, a village in the mountainous Tương Dương area of Nghệ An. Vietnamese government and local reporting identified the adult victims as Lo Văn Thọ, his mother Viêng Thị Dương and his wife Lê Thị Yến. The fourth victim was Thọ and Yến's very young son.
Sources differ slightly on the child's rendered given name and age: some reports use Lo Anh Chung, while a Vietnamese government report uses Lo Việt Chung, and contemporary accounts variously describe him as an infant or a little over one year old. The core fact does not vary: four members of the same family were killed.
The July 2 confrontation
According to the indictment and later court reporting, Vi Văn Hai encountered Lo Văn Thọ in the farming area on July 2, 2015. A dispute developed after Hai picked lemons and Thọ confronted him. The prosecution record also described an accusation concerning Hai and Thọ's wife as part of the conflict between the men.
The confrontation escalated. The court found that Hai killed Thọ and then killed the three other family members in the surrounding area. Because the deaths included a child and because the underlying facts are already sufficiently serious, this page does not reproduce the graphic mechanics of the attacks.
Discovery and investigation
The victims were discovered later that day in the rural C5 Kèn Tạ area. The scale of the crime led to a major police operation. Nghệ An police, working with national criminal-investigation authorities, arrested Vi Văn Hai on July 19, 2015.
Vietnamese reporting states that Hai admitted the killings during the investigation and again acknowledged responsibility during the first-instance proceedings. The prosecution charged him with murder under the criminal code then in force.
The September 2015 trial
On September 30, 2015, the Nghệ An Provincial People's Court held the first-instance trial. The court found Hai guilty of murdering all four victims and imposed a death sentence. Reporting from the proceeding also described civil compensation obligations to surviving relatives.
The judgment treated the four deaths as one criminal episode. This archive does the same: it does not split each member of the family into a separate case file simply to increase a country count.
Appeal and final procedural outcome
Hai initially appealed and asked for a reduction of the sentence. The High People's Court in Hanoi convened the appellate hearing in Nghệ An on June 28, 2016.
At that hearing, Hai withdrew his appeal. Local police and major Vietnamese outlets reported that, after the court explained the consequences, he accepted the first-instance judgment. The withdrawal ended the appellate challenge and left the murder conviction and death sentence in place.
What the case does — and does not — establish
The evidence and court record establish Vi Văn Hai's responsibility for the four murders. The reported dispute helps explain the sequence presented by prosecutors, but it does not excuse the killing of Thọ or the other family members. Likewise, the fact that some defense arguments referred to provocation or Hai's personal circumstances belongs to sentencing advocacy; it does not shift responsibility to the victims.
This dossier does not claim a later execution date because no such fact is necessary to establish the final adjudication documented by the 2015 conviction and 2016 withdrawal of the appeal.

Current status
The case is classified Solved / Adjudicated. Vi Văn Hai was convicted of murdering the four family members, and his withdrawal of the appeal in June 2016 left the first-instance judgment in force. No separate pages have been created for the four victims because the deaths form one criminal event. This status was rechecked against the cited Vietnamese sources on September 3, 2026.
