The Murder of Ana Orantes

Decades of abuse

Ana Orantes married José Parejo when she was young and later described a marriage marked by repeated physical and psychological abuse. Contemporary reporting recorded that she had made numerous complaints over the years. By the mid-1990s the couple had separated, yet the legal arrangement following the separation left them occupying different parts of the same property in Cúllar Vega.

That arrangement did not end the conflict. Reports from the period document threats and other incidents after the separation, including a case in which Parejo was later fined for threats and insults directed at Ana.

The television testimony

On December 4, 1997, Ana appeared on the Canal Sur television program De tarde en tarde. She publicly described the abuse she said she had endured during roughly four decades of marriage. The appearance later became one of the most remembered television testimonies in Spain's public discussion of violence against women.

Her account was not a criminal judgment against Parejo, but it placed her own experience in the public record. Thirteen days later, on December 17, Ana was killed at the home in Cúllar Vega.

The murder and surrender

Investigators established that Parejo attacked Ana and killed her using fire after dousing her with an accelerant. This case file does not reproduce further physical detail. Parejo left the scene and later surrendered to the Guardia Civil.

Early statements attributed to him attempted to frame the killing as a reaction to provocation. The eventual criminal case did not accept that narrative as a legal justification. Prosecutors pursued the killing as murder.

Trial and verdict

The case went before a jury in Granada in December 1998. Parejo's defense argued that mental impairment should excuse or substantially reduce his responsibility. The prosecution and private accusers maintained that the evidence supported murder.

On December 15, 1998, the jury found José Parejo guilty of murdering Ana Orantes. The court treated the killing as a deliberate murder and rejected the defense position that he should be absolved on mental-health grounds.

The 17-year sentence

On December 16, 1998, the Provincial Court of Granada imposed a sentence of 17 years in prison, the maximum term requested by the prosecutor in the final stage of the trial. The judgment also ordered financial compensation for Ana's children and imposed a period of exclusion from the place where they lived after any future release.

The court recognized a mitigating factor connected to Parejo's surrender or confession to authorities, but that did not alter the murder conviction itself.

What happened to José Parejo

Parejo remained imprisoned after the conviction. In 2004, while still serving the 17-year sentence, he was transferred from prison to a hospital in Granada and died after a heart attack. He therefore did not complete the full prison term, but the conviction remained intact.

Why the case mattered nationally

Ana Orantes's murder became a major reference point in Spain's public reckoning with gender-based violence. RTVE, Canal Sur and later Spanish reporting have repeatedly described the case as a turning point in public awareness because Ana had spoken openly about abuse shortly before she was killed.

It would be inaccurate to attribute later legal reforms to a single case alone. Spain's policy and legislative changes emerged through broader social, institutional and political processes. But Ana's testimony and murder became an enduring symbol within those changes, and her case continued to be publicly commemorated decades later, including official recognition in Andalusia in 2026.
