The Killing of Aliaksandr Taraikouski

Post-election protests

Belarus held a presidential election on August 9, 2020. The announced result triggered mass demonstrations and an extensive security crackdown. Taraikouski, a 34-year-old Minsk resident, became the first protest-related death publicly confirmed by the authorities.

The wider political context is necessary to understand the confrontation and the later demands for accountability. It does not by itself establish the precise actions or intent of any individual officer.

The death near Pushkinskaya

On the evening of August 10, Taraikouski approached a line of security personnel near Pushkinskaya metro station. Contemporary video showed him in a white shirt, with his hands empty, before a flash and his collapse. He died at the scene from a wound to the chest.

The footage is important because it records part of the encounter. It does not show every preceding event, provide a complete ballistic reconstruction or identify which officer fired the projectile.

The changing official accounts

The Interior Ministry initially said an improvised explosive device intended for officers detonated in Taraikouski's hands. Video published by the Associated Press showed him empty-handed, and his partner said his hands appeared undamaged when she viewed his body.

The Investigative Committee later abandoned the explosive-device explanation. In February 2021 its chairman said officers had used non-lethal weapons after perceiving Taraikouski as a threat and that, through a combination of circumstances, one wound penetrated and caused his death. The shift between those accounts is recorded without treating either statement as an independent judicial finding.

What the public evidence supports

Video reviewed by international media shows a weapon being fired in Taraikouski's direction while he appears unarmed. Reporting on his death certificate described massive blood loss from an open chest wound. The official review itself ultimately acknowledged that a penetrating injury followed the use of a non-lethal weapon.

Those points contradict the first official claim that a device exploded in his hands. They still leave unresolved the projectile, weapon, firing distance, shooter, orders and complete sequence. Claims by outside investigators identifying particular units or individuals remain allegations and are not presented as convictions.

Refusal to open a criminal case

In February 2021 the Investigative Committee announced that it would not open a criminal case. It concluded that officers had acted within their instructions and had used non-lethal weapons from what it described as a safe distance. That procedural decision prevented an ordinary criminal investigation from testing individual responsibility in court.

Human-rights defenders criticized the refusal. Viasna recorded that authorities also declined criminal investigations into the protest deaths of Taraikouski and Aliaksandr Vikhor, despite thousands of complaints concerning police force during the 2020 crackdown.

Accountability and evidentiary limits

A refusal to prosecute is not the same as a trial verdict establishing that no crime occurred. Conversely, visual evidence that contradicts an official narrative does not allow this archive to name a perpetrator without a reliable adjudicated record.

International and Belarusian human-rights groups called for an independent, effective investigation. No completed independent criminal inquiry or conviction for Taraikouski's death was located through September 2026.

Current status

The case remains unsolved for Crime by Region. The death, location and broad custody of the scene are documented, but individual criminal responsibility has not been adjudicated and no criminal case was opened by Belarusian authorities.

This classification will be revised if a competent court, independent investigative mechanism or newly accessible official record establishes additional facts.
