The Murder of Agnes Tirop
A world-class distance runner was killed at home one month after setting a world record. The man charged with her murder pleaded not guilty, later disappeared while on bail, and remains the accused—not a convicted killer—as the High Court prepares to continue the case.
Agnes Jebet Tirop was one of Kenya's leading distance runners. She won the 2015 World Cross Country title, took 10,000-metre bronze at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, placed fourth over 5,000 metres at the Tokyo Olympics and, on September 12, 2021, ran 30:01 to set the women-only world record for 10 kilometres. A month later, on October 13, she was found dead at her home in Iten. She was 25.
The death in Iten
Kenyan reporting and the later court record describe Tirop as having been killed at the home in Iten where she had lived with Ibrahim Rotich. A postmortem reported fatal neck wounds and blunt-force injuries to the head. Those medical findings form part of the prosecution record; this file does not reproduce more graphic descriptions.
Rotich was arrested in Mombasa shortly after the death. Early police statements described him as the principal suspect, but police characterization is not a conviction and is not treated as one here.
Murder charge and not-guilty plea
On November 16, 2021, Rotich appeared before the High Court in Eldoret and pleaded not guilty to murder. Kenya Law's published ruling in Republic v Rotich confirms the murder charge and records that he denied it when taking plea. The case therefore remains an adversarial criminal prosecution in which the state bears the burden of proving guilt.
Rotich was initially denied bail. A later High Court ruling allowed his release under conditions, including geographic restrictions and regular reporting to investigators. The court record and subsequent local reporting show that the proceedings continued while forensic and other evidence was being prepared.
Disappearance while on bail
In 2025, Rotich stopped appearing in court and breached the conditions attached to his release. The High Court issued a warrant for his arrest and ordered the cash bail forfeited to the state. Investigators told the court they were continuing efforts to locate him.
By September 2025 the repeated absence had stalled hearings. Prosecutors then asked for authority to continue the case without him. On December 19, 2025, the High Court allowed the murder trial to proceed in the accused's absence while the arrest effort continued.
The case in 2026
In June 2026, Justice John Chigiti took over the case after the transfer of the judge who had previously handled it. The court directed that earlier proceedings be compiled and scheduled the hearing to resume on November 3, 2026. As of the latest reviewed reporting, Rotich had not been re-arrested and no verdict had been delivered.
This means the status cannot properly be described as solved or adjudicated. There is a named accused, a pending murder charge, a not-guilty plea, a warrant and an active trial process, but there is no murder conviction.
Remembering Agnes Tirop
Tirop's case is more than the procedural history of a criminal file. World Athletics described her as one of the sport's leading young distance runners. Her 30:01 road performance was later formally ratified as the women-only 10km world record, while her championship medals and cross-country title placed her among Kenya's most accomplished athletes of her generation.
Her family has continued attending court proceedings and publicly pressing for the case to move forward. This page treats that continuing search for a legal answer separately from assumptions about who committed the crime.

Current status
Unsolved / active prosecution. Ibrahim Rotich has been charged with Agnes Tirop's murder and has pleaded not guilty. He later absconded while on bail, a warrant remains in force, and the High Court has authorized the trial to continue in his absence. No murder conviction has been reported as of September 1, 2026.
A charge is not a conviction. The existence of a warrant, alleged flight from bail, police statements and prosecution evidence does not permit this archive to call Rotich the murderer unless and until a competent court reaches that conclusion.
